Rules

[ Fallen Leaves' Community Profile | Reader's Guide & Thread Index | Main Page ]

Fallen Leaves is a collaborative writing community. These are the rules. We know they're a little long, but please read everything.

Writing
Fallen Leaves is a collaborative work of fiction created by a group of talented writers. Our writing standards are high, because we want this to be a readable, potentially publishable work of fiction.

Please use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation at all times.

The Writing Standards document contains more information about what we expect from our writers.

Fandom Writing Conventions
When referring to the organization, it is preferred you capitalize the acronym -- ANBU, not Anbu. The word is for all intents and purposes an acronym (for ANsatsu senjutsu tokushu BUtai -- not an acronym as we understand it, but a shortening format the Japanese commonly use), and as ANBU looks much less annoying than AnBu while still getting the fact of the acronym across, we prefer to see it in all caps.

Plot Creation
Players are encouraged to have their characters interact and proactively create plots both inside and outside of the mission structure -- we suggest email as a good way to get in touch with people for planning. If the plot has to do with a mission, please contact fallenmods@gmail.com for approval; outside missions, please contact the mods if a plot would lead to a major character change (disability, death, pregnancy, marriage etc.) or affect Konoha society at large (war, political upheaval, societal rules and mores, destruction of Konoha, etc.) If in doubt, ask first.

Characterization
Do your best to stay in character. There's a lot we don't know about this era of the Narutoverse, and no one acts just the same way at 15 that they do at 30; but if you are writing a canon character, please act accordingly, keeping in mind that the canon character is what your RPG character is going to grow into. Even if you're writing an OC, there are certain basic aspects of human behavior everyone should keep an eye on -- for instance, a 20-year old man will not act like a hyper 15-year old girl just because he's fallen in love, and a gay character should not be a weeping ultrafeminine uke or any other such walking stereotype.

Character Strength
Please remember that your character is not invincible or all-knowing. Your character is not permitted to beat down every single opponent without ever taking a hit, and the things your character knows about the game world are separate from the things you know -- if you just found out Shinobi X is a spy, but your character doesn't know yet, your character is NOT allowed to corner Shinobi X on the street and start flinging accusations. Similarly, your character is an elite ANBU squad member. He or she should be functioning at the top of his or her rank, and not making genin-level mistakes without serious repercussions.

Content
Fallen Leaves is aimed at readers and writers of age 18 and above.

Our one content rule is as follows: If it goes beyond an R rating or otherwise seems too disturbing (use your discretion), please put it behind a cut tag and mark the thread as containing NC-17 content. If you are posting a reply to a thread and your reply exceeds an R rating, put the phrase "NC-17" in the title of the reply comment.

Please keep in mind the theme of this game: Fallen Leaves is here to explore the reality of life in ANBU. This is a mature collaborative writing community. This story contains sexual content, harsh language, emotional/psychological issues, violence, gore, and all around creepy-ass disturbing shit; you name it, it might appear in Fallen Leaves, so if you're squeamish or have moral concerns, please turn back now. This is a universe where things like little boys killing hundreds of their peers in cold blood are known to happen, and we are here to explore the reality of such a world. The Naruto world is not all goodness, light, and happy 12-year-old Genin, and the ANBU know it better than anyone.

Lighthearted moments are okay too, but let the dark side of the Naruto continuity inspire you.

Pace and Post Frequency
The pace of Fallen Leaves is deliberately slow. We prioritize quality writing over quantity. However we do expect a certain minimum activity level from our writers. Please do your best to post at least once each week if you are involved in a thread, and once every two weeks if you are not currently involved in a thread. If you know you will be unable to post for a certain period of time, please contact the mods to fill us in. A simple "I'm busy but I still want to be in the game, don't delete my character" type email will suffice.

If you go on hiatus without prior arrangements, don't be surprised when you return if the plot has been rewritten around you. The moderators reserve the right to temporarily write for a character on hiatus if necessary to move a plot forward, though this will only be used sparingly and in the most extreme circumstances when no other satisfactory solution can be found (hopefully that means never).

Characters may be involved in no more than three active threads at one time.

Post Format
The main plot of Fallen Leaves will take place entirely in the [info]fallen_leaves community. Players will post here in third person, past tense, and the scene will be written through replies as comments to the original post. The subject line should be marked as "open" if anyone is invited to join in, or it may be "closed" to certain characters. Important: Please tag your thread with the names of the characters involved.

Example subject lines:
No Missions is Good Missions [Open] This means that anyone can reply.
Two Guys Walk Into a Bar... [Tag to Shikaku and Genma] This means that the original poster would like Shikaku and Genma to reply, but anyone may do so.
The Mission of d00m! [Closed to Shikaku and Genma] This means only Shikaku and Genma can reply.
What the Daimyou Saw [Closed] This means that no one can reply.

Character accounts are not actual in-character journals, but may be used to post IC thoughts and reflections in first person format. Characters may read and comment on each other's accounts, which should be thought of as an ongoing conversation -- or gossip, perhaps -- between characters. (Since online journals do not actually exist in the Fallen Leaves universe, if you want to make a reference in a thread to a conversation carried out on a first-person journal entry, you and the other participating writer(s) will need to decide when and where the conversation took place. It is not otherwise necessary to know this information in advance unless you plan to make such a reference.) The subject line may be marked as "private" if the character does not want anyone to see their post, or it may be "closed" to certain characters. All character account entries should be IC; please post OOC material to the OOC community.

Out-of-Character posts should be posted to the OOC community.

Character Count
Under normal circumstances, writers are allowed up to two characters each. Once you've been accepted for a first character, feel free to apply for a second at any time; whether you are approved will depend on the application plus how active you've been with your first character. Devoted and active writers may eventually earn the right to an optional third character if they desire one.

IC/OOC
Please don't confuse in-character and out-of-character circumstances. If a character is angry at your character, that does not mean their writer is angry at you. Conversely, if you have a fight with the writer of your character's best friend, your two friendly characters should not be breaking out in arguments. IC relationships have NOTHING to do with OOC relationships, and vice versa.

Conduct (AKA, the "don't be an ass" rule)
Respect your fellow writers and always treat them the way you would want to be treated: that is, politely and kindly. If you have a problem with another writer, tactfully bring it up with them, with a modly third party present if it seems necessary; don't leave problems to fester between yourself and other writers. Be willing to compromise, and try to maintain a fun, positive, stress-free environment for everyone's enjoyment.

It cannot be stressed enough that this is an important rule. If the moderators feel you are disrupting the harmony of the game or causing strife between writers, you run a high risk of being asked to leave. Please do your best to get along with everyone.

The Most Important Rule in This Long-Ass List
HAVE FUN! If you're not enjoying yourself, there's no reason to be here :)

If you need clarification on any of these rules, or want to address something that's been left out, please don't hesitate to ask!
