Holy shit O_O this was amazing! So much happiness but wrapped around real hard earned relaxation... I love Kakashi's throat biting declaration of his intention not to leave :) lol so Kakashi XD he can be such a "dog" in the literal sense :) and I love how Ryouma just rolls with all of it (and busted out laughing about the dog's watching XD) and just all of this was fantastic :D I love how you had them in such a different situation than we've seen them and yet they both came off perfectly in character XD kudos!!
I admit I'm beyond nervous about what will come next because happiness never lasts long in FL O_O ...

I kept checking back today, and now it's up! First 11 parts, then I refresh and there's 18! Hurrah! So I'm going back to read :)
For now, some selected lines: ""G--Loverboy, tell me that's you." His voice came out too quick, pitched low with something edging close to panic. He didn't care. "C'mon, kid. I'm right here. Talk to me.""
and
"Hearing is the sense that returns soonest from unconsciousness, so the experts say, but scent was what Genma was aware of first."
Your details are gorgeous things :)

Wow, I was just about to post a “*blink blink*” (over the apparent death of Genma) from Woke With This Fear when you posted this thread.
Being Ninja can really suck.
I have always enjoyed the bond you two write between these two Shinobi. While I can't say I don't enjoy slash, what really brings me to this community is the camaraderie, the unbreakable bonds between the ANBU operatives in this story and the fact that while it has light moments, it shows the true hard life that would go with being an ANBU shinobi. This chapter highlights that to the core. The stories build a real world at least a real world for ANBU of the Hidden Leaf Village.
I am anxiously awaiting then next thread.

Again, nicely done. I especially liked Genma's fear of Sago (proof that even the strongest ninja can be shaken) and the insistence on counting backwards but never meeting zero. I can't wait for the next chapter!
On a more random note, I'd like to write something from the POV of the mist-nin when the arc's completed. Would that be okay with you?

Woah... when they grilled Raidou's face I actually gasped "Holy shit" and my hand flew up to my mouth. Was not expecting it at that very moment. FFFF and Genma, my God, how does he manage not to break down sobbing watching what they're doing to Raidou???? I know he's staying strop for his best buddy but holy shit I know how awful it is watching someone you lvoe her hurt and wishing it were you... Poor Genma. Thank goodness Raidou's out, and now Genma can have a well deserved cry. :(

What an incredible roller coaster ride! I was starting to believe they were depending on rescue, but holding out for their strength and abilities to be enough. Still not out of the woods, but I was gratified with their own ability to escape.
I want Raidou to deliver Genma safe to Konoha and grab Ryouma and Kakashi and go back and kick some missing-nin butt (Ryouma melting, Kakashi Chidori'ing and Raidou just pounding faces). Actually I would rather Genma & Raidou get their revenge together - I believe in this team. Thanks for another exciting chapter.

Oh wow, Genma... Genma Genma Genma. You didn't really expect to ever go through that again, did you? You knew it was possible but deep down inside you never actually believed it could happen... poor baby *___* I had this weird tight, hot feeling in my chest readong about what he was going through, and one point I stopped breathing completely then all I could do was make these miniscule gasps for air as I read on. God I could feel how badly he was freaking out, amazing.
I really, really loved Raidou taking pity on Genma and "putting him out of his misery", so to speak. Genma's been through a lot and I love the emphasis you guys put on Raidou being physically stronger than his partner and being able to take more on his shoulders even if, in the long run, he's going to regret it. He's probably not got much energy left and he's already doing so much.
I also love how much comfort Genma takes in Raidou's presence being right there next to him. It doesn't really show any unpardonable weakness, it's just Genma who isn't some brute force bull. It shows a side of him I really like.
GH I love you guys, need moar.

FINALLY got around to reading the Ibiki/Tsume interrogation thread and IT WAS SO GOOD.
Tsume's terror and Ibiki's...
lust
were both brilliantly played. I ADORED the little details, like Shida talking in Ibiki's ear and Botan making a reappearance. *snickers at the reference to Asuma*
The plot and pacing was fantastic. It completely threw me when it turned out Tsume wasn't being accused of anything Doom-related, but instead of an entirely different, almost mundane issue. That was
fantastic
.
(I'd also wager she'll never toss a chair in an interrogation room EVER AGAIN.)
"She reached the end of the corridor, grabbed the door to the staircase, yanked it open--
And felt cold. All along her back, down her arms and legs. Cold and stiff, as if she'd been sitting for hours. Her legs jerked with a walking stride for half a breath, while the world came crashing in.
She didn't go anywhere. She was sitting, and it was cold." -- This sudden lurch is brilliant. I really liked the emphasis on being cold and stiff as a marker for time.
And Ibiki's whole thing about liking her more because she's a woman and
little
was just great.
"The vast majority of Ibiki's subjects were men, and though he certainly enjoyed the power he had as an interrogator, the thrill of having that power over an attractive woman--a clan leader, no less--was nearly intoxicating." -- *loves*
Oh man, and the details that flesh out the whole picture. Ibiki's scary-ass coat, his
gloves
, the ROOM--I felt claustrophobic reading it. Especially with Tsume feeling like she's drowning.
And I really enjoyed Ibiki's questions. In a weird way, he's almost practicing a twisted form of counselling -- picking up on certain things she says, discerning hidden meanings, reflecting back words. Reading body language and context. Beautiful writing.
And did I mention the love for Shida? SO MUCH LOVE.
"It was beyond ridiculous. Laughter mingled with terror and almost spilled out, hysterical. She had to get away from him. He was massive, wreathed in the dead animals that made up his leather coat and stretched gloves, with scars twisting across his face and smelling--" Man oh man. Especially that dead animal line. The writing is just
rich
.
"Inuzuka were poor liars, at least in general. A clan alpha like Tsume might be a different story though. Leadership and lies went hand in hand." I could just
roll
in Ibiki's little observations about the world.
And I really, really loved Tsume's lip curl at the end, when she's safely out of range. And how Ibiki
knew
that gesture for what it was. I think this is the first time we've seen Tsume genuinely terrified, without any recourse left open to her (and Raidou is
highly
disappointed that she didn't rifle through any mental taijutsu. But I think that alone was a sign of how almost beyond
thought
she was). And, just--
YOU GUYS.
*flailing love*
I can't
wait
to set up one of my characters against Ibiki.
Also, Nezu, that last tag? *dies of dark humour* (Seriously. I think I laughed out loud when he adjusted the fit of his trousers and Shida gave him ten minutes. *so dead*)

Just finished reading the last part and it has left me angsty. So so angsty. You cannot fathom how angsty. And by angsty I mean barely able to reason, articulate, or locomote. Fuck Oxford and its English dictionary. That is my definition of angsty as shaped by the overpowering essence that is Fallen Leaves and its various constituents.
It has also left me in pain, not merely emotional, but physical because I am drawn in so damn much by the trauma of your threads that I cannot help scrunching up every muscle group along my neck and shoulders until they are permanently knotted with a tension so massive I need to take fucking ibuprofen to get rid of the pain.
There is so much I want to say and so little of my brain willing to function enough to allow me to express it. I will try anyway, so if this makes little sense, well you only have yourselves to blame because this arc has broken my brain.
Your descriptions are so staggering, so palpable, so poignant.
The air here was heavy and warm compared to Konoha, and the few trees they could see included cherries in full and glorious blossom, shedding pink and white petals in the rising wind.
I could see this.
The poison stung Genma's eyes, burned on his skin. Filled his doubly masked mouth with a taste like burning cherries.
I was eating cherries when I happened tripped over that line and I could taste it.
Sago's pliers bit into the meat of his hand, twisting and tearing. Chakra ripped through small bones, shattering the forth metacarpal. Plier teeth tore a tag of skin and flesh away, exposing twitching tendons.
I could fucking feel that. Thank you by the way, because it was exactly what I needed to feel to brighten my night. *chokes and dies on sarcasm*
I don’t have the brains or energy to comb through and give you more quotes. But there are billions. If pictures are worth a thousand words, your words are worth ten thousand moving, breathing, feeling pictures that incessantly beat me with sound and color and taste and smell and
emotion.
Genma and Raidou: Ay. Ay. Ay, yay, yay, yay, yay. Ayyyyyyyyyy bendiiiiiiiiiiiiiito . . . (Anyone remember that tiny Spanish lesson from the last time you guys ripped my heart out?)
Again, this phrase pretty much sums up all my disjointed, distraught and disturbed thoughts on the matter. Sadists, you are undeniably so. And I a sadomasochist for reading and enjoying your work despite the way it wrenches my soul from my body. Melodramatic? Maybe, but I’m the type of person that lives what I read/watch/write, so I can’t help having theatrical reactions to these things.
It’s interesting. Despite the horrid improbability of a good end in a situation like this, their desire to keep each other going even in the most excruciatingly unbearable of circumstances, me going too; keeps me fighting through the horror and gore and aaaangst, and the ‘OMG! CAN THIS GET ANY WORSE—APPARENTLY IT CAN!!’ moments of these threads with that foolish hope for that eventual happing ending time.
Their desperation to save and protect each other, is nothing short of inspiring, and so heartwarming I don’t know whether to cry or laugh so I end up doing a combination of both. I cannot
wait
for the next part of this, and I’m simply swooning over the possibilities for the fallout to this mission will produce.
My brain refuses to process anymore thought, and rebels at the thought of proofreading so forgive my typos. Toodles until the next part of this torturously beautiful arc.

I'd say this is one of the best threads you two have ever written. The tension, and the bantering, oh the bantering killed me. Genma trying to walk when he really shouldn't, and Raidou's fear of needles--it all fit together so perfectly.
Also, I thought of the song "My Little Box", from Ghost Ship. I'm afraid I don't know who sings it, but here's a link:

Bah, so I was going to wait until the latest Genma and Raidou arc was finished before commenting, but I couldn't help myself...
It's...wow. You guys are awesome at writing - everything feels so real, there. The fight scene at the end of the first part I thought was especially great; I could feel the urgency and the action. I love, too, how you can write something such as the torture scenes, and make it clear how horrifying and terrible the situation is without being overly-dramatic or ridiculous. It makes the situation and the characters feel so very
real.
And of course now I'm dying to know what will happen in the next part. I feel so sad for Genma especially - going through all of that and now...

I'm no longer anonymous! Yay! (long anonymous posts a bit above are mine, as are some other archaic anonymous posts)
And now for commenting:
"It was enough. It was damn near everything." The best part about this is how it was set up through the whole progression of threads, with all the varying references to 'enough' and 'not enough,' from protection and saving to torture, and finally, to these emotions.
I like the woman who "talked like a textbook, glared like a hawk, sounded like a sharpened knife." Not really sure why, but I'd enjoy to see her back again someday :) (and I like the medics in general, in most of the threads in FL. They're often so cute and unique. The other perspective, throwing the reader out of Genma and Raidou's focused thoughts for a moment, adds a lot to the narrative. e.g. ""Mother of God, I hate these ANBU cases," someone swore. "Can we do something about this? Get him down where he can see his partner before he kills himself or one of our staff? Look at this mess!"")
"When he felt the electric connection of chakra to chakra, like a circuit being completed." This simile really, really worked for me. It implies more than just physical chakra connection, but the idea that the two of them aren't complete without the other, without making it seem that Genma is thinking that. Nicely done.
And the beginning: "One of the hardest tasks a medic ever faced, according to the wisdom of Konoha's most experienced healers, was keeping alive a patient who believed he had lost any reason to continue the struggle." With the counting of the hours, it worked very well. Though, after "Follow You into Dark," I wasn't sure for a bit who was most lost.
On the topic of "Follow..." the green-eyes bit was nicely done. The parallelism is also nice; ending with "It hadn't been enough" as compared to the end of "Meet..."
I'm looking forward to how this new depth to their relationship falls out in the future!

Okay. Here goes. This is gonna be a long long long line of comments. XD
Okay.
"There was an Intel agent in dress-greys standing in front of Raidou's door."
o.o I saw this line, and I was like, "Oh no! Incoming epic plot!"
"His mask was already waiting for him, resting face-up on top of his weapons chest."
Oh lord. And if this isn't a great way to wake someone up and make them alert while reading, I don't know what is. I mean, it really is it - the mask, the call to duty. It's really the kind of line that makes readers pause, and straighten themselves in their chair to start reading some amazing threads. The anticipation!!!
"All traces of dream and sleep evaporated under the influence of the fresh adrenaline that command kicked into Genma's system. Getting yanked from bed in the wee hours for a mission you'd been hand-picked for happened pretty much one of two ways: you were a rookie being hazed, or something was really the fuck wrong."
- This was a lovely line. I mean, the fact that it's such a logical rationale makes it so real! As always, I can see Genma, thinking those thoughts, and gearing up for hell. It's amazing.
"How the hell are you always faster at getting ready than I am?" he asked, and clicked his door shut. Since the Intel agent had woken them, only seven minutes had passed."
Another lovely detail. The usual quirks that make up the dynamic between Raidou and Genma. It's amazing. These little things that make them so darned REAL. It's really sending shivers down my spine, if only because I can hear them, see them, and they are
real
.
"Even with the violent wake up, it still usually took Genma's reflex sarcasm a few minutes to catch up with the rest of him, which was one of the very few perks about partnering with a guy who really wasn't a morning person."
- Another
lovely
detail. It says so much about the experience both of them have together. The utter familiarity of the two is amazing, and it's so palpable. I mean, Genma and Raidou - they've spent a lifetime and more together, and in this, we see every detail, every little piece of knowledge that comes with them knowing each other.
"When the doors slid open with a quiet ping, Genma almost got flattened by an overeager pair of chuunin bearing armloads of folders. The two teenagers jerked back with a double harmonic of surprised squawks when both ANBU reacted with reflexively drawn blades."
- Oh man, I grinned so hard when I read this. :D I mean, haha. Nothing speaks ANBU like metal and reflex. And it's lovely, their walk down to the room punctuated with this little tidbit. It makes the whole thread so real. It's so amazing, because it's almost too real for me to believe that this is writing. It's too amazing to be fictional. Or perhaps it's too amazing to be real? :D The whole of HQ, the whole of the Fallen Leaves world - it's so true, it's as though this is just an account of what has really happened.
"Those guys were lucky it was us in the elevator and not some hair-trigger rookies. What kind of idiot walks into an elevator without making sure it's empty first?" He dropped the kunai he'd drawn back into its holster on his leg, where it settled against its fellows with a subtle clank."
Again, another detail that made this thread great. It's this really subtle yet obvious reminder that our beloved ninja are what they are - Ninja. They have these habits so ingrown into their entire being, that something as mundane as going into an elevator without first checking is something as incredibly stupid as walking into a wall. They are killers, ninja, ANBU, and humans that have had led a life of battle and trial, and you guys have never let us forget it. And it is amazing.

The Genma/Raidou threads. Torture and fear, and the two of them surviving because of and for each other. I waited until all the threads where up, then read straight through. And now my brain is overloaded, my heart is bleeding for them, and I'm so relieved that they are home. This is why I love Fallen Leaves!

"But you're hardly the first one to decide those two are working on a love affair to rival the one between the daimyou's son and the foreign envoy in
Prince of No Man
."
So
this arc
broke my heart into itty-bitty pieces and then stitched it back together again.
So, Raidou and Genma are joined at the hip. They go on missions together, they live next to each other, they spend a great big chunk of time outside of missions together. Need I reference the curry-of-DOOM thread? They're always getting into bad spots and pulling each other out again. Even Tsume, in one memorable report, said that:
"furthermore, i firmly believe they should NEVER BE REMOVED FROM EACH OTHERS PRESENSE.
this would cause a complete and totally unbelivable meltdown the likes of which no one has seen since that mist nin hired the grass nin to try and kill
this would cause both of them to stop functioning completely. they are both newrotic and drenched in ptsd, but they each know the others triggers and are able to keep each others heads together. splitting them up would be a bad idea
only a stupid person would make
.
together, as a unit, they are functional and more than able to continue at high ranked missions
because if they do die, theyll only kill each other
for the forese
e
able future. they work well together, fluidly and as a true team. seperated i firmly believe that there unstable and possibly dangerous."
Truer words never spoken. So of course when Dark said that a new six-part thread was going to be up in a couple of days, I was very excited. And held off commenting until the whole thing was up. So!
Woke With This Fear
We know that it is going to be bead. We know that they are going to get into deep shit. So when Genma and Raidou get captured, and all Genma can think about is how Raidou is going to have to watch him be garrotted, and all Raidou can think about is that he is supposed to
die
for Genma before he lets this happen to him. Which really proved to me that these boys have got something amazing going on. But I digress...
Strong on the Surface
and
All the Way Through
And then their triggers get attacked. They go for Raidou's face and Genma's hands, and the boys have to watch each other be tortured. Which had me wincing the entire time, which means some pretty great writing. But what really got me was that they still value their jobs as ANBU as much as they value each other. So even as they watch each other being ripped to pieces they aren't going to say a thing, and would be horrified if the other person gave in
because of their suffering
and blabbed it all.
And when it's Genma's turn, Raidou tries to take the pain for him. But Genma gets his fingers broken one by one. So when he used the poison I was certainly pleasantly surprised. And when they get out I breathed a huge sigh of relief.
"And then Genma's most hideous nightmare came to life.
Someone was breaking
Raidou's
hands."
The fact that
this
is Genma's most hideous nightmare says a lot about them, don't you think?

Oh wow, I missed Doubt In Your Faith... thank goodness I realized it, it was SUCH a powerful thread, never giving up, your friend being what spurs you on when you have nothing left to go on. Wow. The extend both these guys will go to for each other is so inspiring.

Heya, I'm Schwimmy, and I am a HUGE fan of this site, the writers, the plot, the activity, all that jazz. I'm actually seriously considering writing a profile and trying out... But I'm kind of intimidated by the quality of writing. I hope I can get up my courage and try because it's summer and it's time to just go for it!
I love the characters-so original (I love Tsume) and realistic. The relationships are so in-depth and develop at just the right pace. You guys ROCK!
The only slightly negative thing about the site is that it seems that the thread index is a little out dated...I can only see up to It Won't Be Long, but when I check the FallenLeaves page thingy (I am at a complete loss at how to navigate insanejournal-never used it outside of checking this site) there's a whole host of references to threads that I have never even heard of but would absolutely love to read! Update the thread list please? Or tell me where to find it because I'm at a loss.

Blind-Sided
This was a surprise!! I didn't really know what to expect from Kuromaru/Kakashi interaction, but it certainly wasn't this! (And don't worry, I mean it in a good way. ^.~)
First of all, to resist that amount of fucking
CUTE
, Kakashi is hella-hardened. WOAH. I was
dying
of the CUTE when Kuromaru ran to bring his eye-patch. OMFG. I want this creature by my side on a daily basis to bring smiles to my life. Oh, and Kuromaru's comment about him and Kakashi being mates. Dude. Fell out my chair laughing. You have NO idea how much I love that stupid mutt. Fucking AHHHH. *glomps Kuro and never lets go*
It was awesome to have Kuro and Tsume scent the new turn in Kakashi and Ryouma's relationship. I thought they would eventually, and wondered what the reaction would be. My heart went out to Tsume on this, her vehement denial of how much Ryouma inadvertently hurt her was just ahhh.
Kakashi's shock about Kuro's mounting comment,
priceless
. Dark, I give thee flowers. ^.~ I like how you guys always bring in the pack ideology with the Inuzuka. I remember Kakashi not dealing well with that issue when in the hospital room with Ryouma, Tsume and her family, so it was very interesting to see how far he would go to establish his status as the top dog.
Kuromaru's reaction, on the other hand, shocked me. I'm starting to see how much the reprogramming of Ryouma as the alpha is affecting his interactions with others. Whereas before, he was on top, no question about it whatsoever, here he considered himself and Kakashi equals, something I don't remember him doing for anyone but Tsume . . . and even with Tsume there had always been these little spats for dominance over each other. Then to have Kuromaru make such a . . . I wanna say
mild
effort, to reassert himself against Kakashi's dominating attitude was . . . wow. Just mind boggling. This new attitude really brings home how messed up the whole DOOM mission has left Kuromaru.
It's really heart breaking. Although Kuromaru in all his comical canine essence hasn't changed, it breaks my heart to see him letting himself be dominated by
anyone
. I cannot imagine how much it breaks Tsume's heart. Which is another thing that surprised me actually. Her reaction to Kakashi muzzling Kuro was equally mild as Kuro's efforts against Kakashi. I would have expected much more growling and at least a punch in the face for such a heinous crime. I suppose it was due to being blind-sided (no pun intended) with the reality of Ryouma and Kakashi's relationship. Still, I would have liked to see at least an attempt at violence, but maybe that's just because I wouldn't not have let Kakashi take his shower without a well aimed boot to the face first. Ahem. (Still love him! ^.^)
I always write these silly things super late . . . or early as it seems, so forgive typos and such.

Dude, That Was YOU?
GINTA!!! X333333 *Spazz*Flail*Glomp*
I can't get enough of this guy. There's something about Ginta that seriously just breaks my heart. When I read him, despite how friendly and bubbly he is, I seriously get this aura of loneliness from him, and urge to just hug him and never let go is quite powerful. It doesn't help of course that he
can't
stop thinking about Kakashi. I really love how he just seems to permeate Ginta's consciousness despite his best efforts to block him out. It speaks to the depths of his attachment in a way that is very unobtrusive to the narrative.
Another thing I really
really
liked seeing in this was that little bit of insight into his feelings about Genma's attachment to Raidou. There seems to be some jealousy there, which again makes me think of Ginta as lonely, which leads to dangerously strong urges to hug . . . Moving on!!
His interactions with Hiro were cute and entertaining, and I was oh so amused by all the euphemistic banter. I really appreciated the non-melodramaticness of the reunion with his one time savior too. It's definitely one of those "now what?" situations, so I found the slight bit of awkward to the whole thing very fitting.
Onto Hiro!! Woo!! XD This kid is very very likeable. I love how his Intel training, and also Hyuuga decorum, suffuses his everyday interactions, as it should. Things like that are what makes this place shine with verisimilitude, something especially crucial in OCs. Every little detail is so carefully crafted, particularly evident in characters like Hiro, yet it all reads so effortlessly.
I cannot tell you how much I adored Hiro's ability to match Ginta tit for tat. It was
most
amusing to see him easily bat euphemisms and flirtatious remarks back and forth with ease, even when something inwardly unsettled him.
"I'm glad you were okay," he spoke quietly, and was surprised to find that he was truly glad. Glad that out of that nightmare, he had managed to salvage something, at least. Something worth saving.
It wasn't quite pride that he felt, and it certainly wasn't strength. But whatever it was, it felt good all the same.
That was insightful, and if I may, fucking adorable too. X3
I really hope these two can become good friends and will have more threads together soon, because I really enjoyed their interactions.

Hiro is really growing on me. I hadn't really noticed him at first, but this new thread brought him to my attention and I read back, coming to the conclusion that
HE IS VERY, VERY COOL.
His jutsus are amazing (and cool), the way he makes sure all items of his clothing and equipment are matte is cool, his supreme poker face is cool. I love his banter with Ginta, the way he manages to conceal his uncertainty and nervousness was excellent. I think he has really managed to become an individual among the droves of faceless Hyuuga, which is really difficult to do.
I love their interaction, I love the backstory and the lectures, and I cannot wait to see more of him.
